Here’s the sixth installment in the “Happy Tails” feature. The intent is to help create a positive image of shelter pets. There are still many misconceptions and negative beliefs held by the public that are barriers to adoption. By highlighting successful adoptions I aim to show that you can find healthy, loving dogs and cats at Miami-Dade Animal Services.

Meet Penny Lane! This adorable little girl was adopted from MDAS in August of 2007. I asked her owner, Laurie, some questions about her –
What made you decide to adopt a dog from a shelter?
I decided to adopt from a shelter because I volunteered at MDAS a couple of times and I knew at that moment that I would ALWAYS adopt from a shelter. I might have saved her life, but she saved mine.
What made you pick this particular dog?
I went with the intention of getting a scruffy-looking dog, the one that would be passed up by all, but my Penny Lane was shy and curled up in the corner and scared, yet adorable, and I wanted to save her the moment I laid eyes on her.
How was the transition period when your dog was adjusting to their new home?
She fit right in at home. I had a Basset Hound, Aloysius, at home and he couldn’t care less that she was there, and I think the feeling was mutual. They really didn’t interact with each other. But she curled up on my lap the first evening and she does every night since.
What was the most fun thing you learned about your new dog after you brought them home?
I learned that Penny Lane is quite the spunky dog! She definitely has some character. If I would have waited for her personality to come out, I would have named her “Punky Brewster”
What is your dog’s favorite thing to do?
When it’s cool outside, Penny Lane, all 15 pounds, likes to go running with me. We run about 2 miles and she keeps up! She loves car rides, long walks and playing with little kids.
Would you adopt again from a shelter or recommend it to others?
I will ALWAYS adopt. I love a rescue dog, they are, to me, more loving and grateful. She is the best thing that has ever happened to me and I’m sure she would agree.
