Pet Photography Project 52 Week 14 : Leading Lines

Welcome to another post in the Pet Photography Project 52 blog circle. This week’s topic is “Leading Lines”. This is a composition technique in photography that uses visual lines to lead the viewer’s eye to specific points in the image. Some examples of leading lines can be roads, bridges, architectural structures and even the shoreline of a beach or river.

In my images I tried using several elements at a local park to draw the viewer’s eye to my 2 subjects this week – Henry and Max.

*Bonus Content!* – It turns out that Henry & Max were both adopted from Miami-Dade Animal Services, the county shelter I volunteer at. That makes this a “Happy Tails” post also! There’s some info about them and their story below the photos.

In these 2 photos I used the concrete wall to draw the viewer’s eye toward Henry and Max.

Henry. I just love his ears!

In these 2 images there is a very colorful bridge I used.

A Happy Tail

As I mentioned above, both Max & Henry were adopted from Miami-Dade Animal Services. When I asked their owner, Yvonne, to tell me a little bit about them this is what she said:

“I adopted Max ten years ago from MDAS as an eight week old puppy. He is literally the best dog. He has been my best friend and constant companion for the last ten years. Loving, loyal, intelligent and super cuddly. He likes nothing better than a nap on the couch. Loves people and dogs and always wants to give kisses. Max recently had surgery in January for a torn cruciate ligament. After 3 months of rehab he is almost completely back to normal.

Henry was found outside of MDAS eight years ago when he was about 12 weeks old. He had been dumped because he had mange. Poor guy had very little hair and huge swollen paws. A Good Samaritan took him to the vet for treatment and I adopted him a few days later. He had to have meds and medicated baths (every 3 days) for a few months to clear up his condition. Since then he has been the healthiest dog ever. His coat grew in and he grew up to be an awesome dog. Henry is independent, smart, happy and loves to play with toys. He makes me laugh every day. He is friendly but is perfectly content to play on his own. He gives the best kisses and loves to curl up next to me in bed. He has the most expressive ears and sometimes looks like he’s ready to fly.

I am super lucky to have both these wonderful dogs in my life. Don’t know what I’d do without them.”

Don’t forget to visit all the other wonderful photographers in this week’s circle. Up next is Nancy Kieffer Photography serving Central New York, the Adirondacks and beyond.

Thanks! Yvonne had actually adopted these guys long before I met her, but hopefully my current volunteer efforts at the shelter they came from are helping other dogsReplyCancel

Thanks! This park is kind of a hidden gem as far as photography is concerned. Beautiful landscaping, lots of interesting elements. The locals use it, but I never see any other photographers there.ReplyCancel

Love reading the story – If I get to where I am taking photographs of dogs that have been adopted, I would love to follow your example and ask the story behind the dog – it’s such a personal touch.  Great photos – I do love Henry’s ears – never seen anything like that!ReplyCancel

Thanks! I started doing “Happy Tails” stories about dogs adopted from the county animal shelter because for a number of reasons – to counter balance all the pleas for help, to show all the staff and volunteers how their hard work pays off and hopefully show the public that you can find perfectly good animals at the shelter. There is unfortunately still a stigma attached to shelter animals – that there is something wrong with them. I think it prevents a lot of people from wanting to adopt from a shelter.ReplyCancel

I see that Henry sits “kickstand-style” like one of my dogs does. I love the “stories” from the dogs’ person.ReplyCancel
